Description
Early in the first trimester, the conceptus is shown within a translucent amniotic sac, with the embryo in a C shaped flexed posture and a disproportionately large cranial pole positioned superior to the curved trunk. Limb buds are now segmented, with proximal limb segments evident and distal paddle like hand and foot plates forming at the lateral aspects of the body wall. The connecting stalk and early umbilical cord region extend from the ventral surface toward the chorionic tissues, which are represented as a thicker, textured placental primordium adjacent to the gestational sac. Scale is small. Week 7 is the moment many learners first recognize the transition from generic embryo to distinctly human form, and this timing matters when correlating sonographic landmarks with normal morphogenesis. The hand plate and elbow region appear before digital rays separate, a sequence that helps frame congenital limb reduction defects and timing of teratogenic exposure.
