Description
Rendered in an anterior thoracic view with an x-ray style translucency, the right and left lungs flank the mediastinum while the trachea descends in the midline to the carina and bifurcates into the main (primary) bronchi. Segmental branching of the bronchial tree radiates laterally and inferiorly through each lobe, suggesting progression toward bronchioles and alveolar regions. Centrally, the heart sits medial to both lungs, with the atria positioned superior to the ventricles and the ventricular mass forming the more inferior cardiac silhouette. This relationship matters any time you need to explain why thoracic disease rarely respects a single system.
