Across the thorax and upper limb, pectoralis major overlies the serratus anterior and rectus abdominis, while the deltoid and biceps brachii sit anterior to brachialis and track toward the cubital fossa where the brachial artery divides into radial and ulnar arteries, with paired venae comitantes and superficial veins coursing more superficially. Inferiorly, the rectus femoris and vastus muscles occupy the anterior thigh, flanked medially by adductor longus, as the femoral neurovascular bundle passes deep to the inguinal ligament and continues into the popliteal vessels posterior to the knee, with tibial and common fibular nerve pathways implied distally. Obesity changes the surface topography that clinicians rely on, so mapping the relationship between muscular contours and vascular and neural trajectories matters in a way that lean-body plates often miss. A thicker subcutaneous fat layer can obscure the femoral pulse and complicate femoral venous cannulation or arterial access, while also increasing the risk of nerve injury if the needle trajectory strays lateral toward the femoral nerve within the femoral triangle. Nerve course relative to muscle compartments is also clinically relevant for entrapment and traction problems, including meralgia paresthetica at the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve near the anterior superior iliac spine and altered landmarking for intramuscular injections in the deltoid or ventrogluteal region.
