Description
Running over the nasal dorsum and lateral nasal cartilages, the nasalis muscle is presented as a superficial sheet with its transverse part (compressor naris) coursing medially across the bridge of the nose and blending near the midline. Laterally, its fibers sit anterior to the nasal bones and superficial to the upper lateral cartilage, with continuity into adjacent muscles of facial expression. Surrounding context commonly visible in this head and neck dissection-style rendering includes orbicularis oculi superiorly, the masseter over the ramus of the mandible inferolaterally, and the sternocleidomastoid descending posteroinferiorly from the mastoid region; the auricle provides a lateral landmark. A small, separate red-highlighted region over the glabella and proximal nasal dorsum corresponds anatomically to the procerus, which lies superior to the nasalis and interdigitates with frontalis and orbicularis oculi fibers.
