Description

Seen in lateral profile, the orbicularis oris forms a continuous muscular sphincter encircling the oral fissure, blending superiorly and inferiorly into the substance of the upper and lower lips. Anteriorly it lies superficial to the alveolar processes and teeth, while posterolaterally its fibers interdigitate at the modiolus with the buccinator and the elevator and depressor groups at the oral commissure. Superolateral facial expression muscles such as zygomaticus major approach the corner of the mouth, and the masseter occupies the lateral ramus of the mandible posterior to the modiolus.
