Description
Metatarsal head anatomy is centered on the rounded distal expansion that forms the bony condyle of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. From a medial view, the convex articular surface curves from dorsal to plantar, with the nonarticular margin blending proximally into the constricted metatarsal neck and then the shaft. The medial tubercle at the base of the head provides attachment for the medial collateral ligament, while the plantar contour suggests the region where the plantar plate and, in the first ray, the sesamoid apparatus relate intimately to the metatarsal head. Small landmarks matter. Medial morphology of the metatarsal head is a frequent pain generator in forefoot pathology. Repetitive loading can drive chondral wear at the MTP joint, and subtle prominence or asymmetry along the medial aspect is often discussed in hallux valgus assessment and in planning distal metatarsal osteotomies where preservation of joint congruity and collateral ligament tension is the goal. The fixed medial perspective makes it easier to teach which surfaces are truly articular versus capsuloligamentous attachment areas, a distinction that can be hard to communicate when students only see the head from a dorsal foot dissection.
