Description
Talar head and neck dominate the lateral aspect of the proximal foot, with the rounded head projecting anteriorly from the narrower neck and sitting distal to the talar body. From this fixed lateral viewpoint, the convex articular surface for the navicular lies anterior and slightly medial relative to the lateral process, while the trochlear surface of the talar dome remains posterior and superior. Inferior to the neck, the subtalar region transitions toward the posterior facet for the calcaneus, and the sulcus tali forms the superior boundary of the sinus tarsi laterally. Bone contours read cleanly. Fracture lines through the talar neck often hinge on this geometry, because displacement can alter the talonavicular relationship and jeopardize retrograde blood supply to the talar body, raising concern for avascular necrosis after high energy ankle injury.
