Description
Axis (C2) is presented from an inferior perspective, centering the paired inferior articular processes and their articular facets as they sit posterolateral to the vertebral foramen. Each inferior articular facet occupies the caudal surface of the C2 articular process, positioned medial to the transverse process and foramen transversarium and anterior to the base of the bifid spinous process. The inferior aspect of the vertebral body and the continuity of the pedicles into the laminae frame the facets, clarifying how the posterior elements form a ring around the spinal canal. Orientation is unambiguous. These inferior articular facets form the C2 to C3 zygapophysial (facet) joints, a common generator of axial neck pain after whiplash injury and a frequent site of degenerative arthrosis with referred pain into the upper cervical region. Because the viewpoint isolates the caudal articular surfaces rather than the dens and atlantoaxial complex, it supports teaching the transition from upper cervical rotation (C1 to C2) to lower cervical coupled motion at C2 to C3, and it helps distinguish facet-mediated pathology from lesions involving the odontoid process. Surface contour matters here, since subtle asymmetry in facet slope can influence joint loading and may be discussed in the context of instability or post-traumatic malalignment.
