Description
Anteriorly oriented, the inferior cardiac border (margo inferior cordis, or acute margin) forms the sharp junction between the sternocostal (anterior) surface and the diaphragmatic (inferior) surface of the heart. The right ventricle accounts for most of this margin, with the right atrium positioned superior and to the right, and the cardiac apex from the left ventricle sitting inferolaterally. A sliver of left ventricle often contributes near the apex. No associated vessels are included, so the contour reads purely as myocardial geometry. Clarifying this border matters because it anchors surface anatomy and helps teach how the heart sits on the diaphragm and relates to the costal margin. On a frontal chest radiograph the acute margin contributes to the right heart silhouette, and blunting or loss of its expected sharpness can accompany pericardial effusion or cardiomegaly, while inferior myocardial infarction can alter diaphragmatic contact and adjacent pericardial reflections.
