Description
Inferior temporal gyrus anatomy dominates the ventrolateral surface of the temporal lobe in this inferior (basal) perspective of the human cerebrum. The gyrus runs anteroposteriorly from the temporal pole toward the occipital region, lying lateral to the occipitotemporal sulcus and fusiform (occipitotemporal) gyrus and inferior to the inferior temporal sulcus that separates it from the middle temporal gyrus on the lateral convexity. Medially, the parahippocampal gyrus approaches the ambient cistern and medial temporal structures, while the inferior temporal cortex remains positioned on the outer basal margin of the hemisphere. Sulcal boundaries are crisp. Inferior temporal cortex matters because it sits within the ventral visual processing stream, where object recognition and high-level visual association converge with temporal lobe language and memory networks. Lesions extending into the inferior temporal gyrus and adjacent fusiform region can contribute to visual agnosia or category-specific naming deficits, and this territory is commonly affected by contusions from blunt trauma against the temporal fossa as well as by low-grade gliomas that track along gyral anatomy.
