Description
Arising laterally in the female chest wall, the lateral mammary arterial supply is traced as it courses through the superficial fascia toward the glandular parenchyma, running deep to the subcutaneous adipose tissue and overlying the pectoralis major. Lobules of the mammary gland occupy the anterior aspect of the breast, suspended by connective tissue septa (Cooper ligaments) that extend toward the dermis, while the vascular network branches into smaller arterioles within and between lobules. Fine accompanying neurovascular lines suggest the cutaneous branches of the lateral cutaneous intercostal nerves traveling with perforating vessels in the lateral breast. For breast surgery, the lateral vascular pedicle is a practical concern. During lateral approaches for lumpectomy, mastectomy flap elevation, or axillary tail dissection (Tail of Spence), injury to lateral perforators and branches classically arising from the lateral thoracic artery can increase bleeding and compromise skin flap perfusion, and the vessel-nerve pairing helps explain postoperative lateral breast and chest wall dysesthesia. Orientation to the plane between glandular tissue and pectoral fascia also supports accurate discussion of retromammary space, a key concept when teaching mobility of the breast on the chest wall and when planning implant pockets. Teaching teams can drop this artwork directly into gross anatomy blocks on thoracic wall and breast, surgical anatomy lectures for breast oncology and plastic reconstruction, or patient education materials explaining why lateral incisions and axillary work can affect sensation and bruising. It also suits atlas plates and journal figures that need a clean correlation between mammary lobules, pectoral musculature, and the lateral arterial network.
