Lateral femoral condyle fills the frame from a posterior standpoint, with the smooth convex articular surface curving inferiorly toward the tibial plateau and turning anteriorly out of sight toward the patellofemoral surface. Medially, the margin approaches the intercondylar fossa, where the lateral wall provides the femoral footprint region for the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on its medial aspect. Superior and lateral to the articular cartilage, the lateral epicondyle stands out as a bony prominence, and just inferior to it the sulcus for the tendon of popliteus can be appreciated along the posterolateral condylar surface. Landmarks read cleanly. Orthopedic surgeons and educators use the posterior contour of the lateral femoral condyle as a landmark for knee stability and for restoring joint line anatomy in reconstruction and arthroplasty, because the relationship between the condylar curvature, the intercondylar notch, and the epicondylar region underpins femoral tunnel placement for ACL surgery and assessment of notch morphology. The popliteus tendon groove and the adjacent posterolateral condylar area also anchor discussion of posterolateral corner anatomy, where injury patterns often involve the popliteus complex and the femoral attachment region of the lateral collateral ligament at the epicondyle. Subchondral irregularity here is a common site for osteochondral defects and chondral wear, and the fixed posterior perspective makes it easier to explain why lesions can be missed without systematic inspection of the posterior femoral cartilage during arthroscopy.
