Description
Posterior arm anatomy is presented from the shoulder to the hand, with the triceps brachii forming the dominant superficial extensor mass along the dorsal humerus. The lateral head occupies the posterolateral compartment, arising from the posterior humerus superior to the sulcus for the radial nerve and lying lateral to the long head, while the medial head would be deeper and only partly suggested beneath the superficial contour. Distally, the triceps tendon converges toward the olecranon of the ulna, with the lateral intermuscular septum separating the triceps from the anterior compartment along the lateral border of the arm. Clean landmarks. Clinically, this posterior perspective helps orient the relationship between the lateral head and the radial nerve as it traverses the radial (spiral) groove, a point of vulnerability in midshaft humeral fractures and in posterior approaches to the humerus. The view also supports teaching of triceps-sparing versus triceps-splitting exposure for distal humerus fixation, where the integrity of the triceps tendon insertion on the olecranon and the lateral fascial septum guides dissection planes and retraction. Surface contour matters when you are mapping injection sites or interpreting extensor bulk loss after nerve injury.
