Description
Running along the inferior surface of the frontal lobe, the lateral orbitofrontal artery is traced in lateral profile as it courses anteriorly toward the orbital gyri. Its caliber and branching pattern are shown as a small cortical vessel (often an arteriole at the periphery) distributed over the gyrus rectus and lateral orbital gyrus, lying inferior to the frontal pole and anterior to the insular region. Nearby surface landmarks implied by this perspective include the Sylvian fissure laterally and the anterior cranial fossa floor deep to the orbital surface. Fine pial branches spread distally across the orbitofrontal cortex. Small vessel, big implications.
