Description
Seen from a lateral perspective, the distal femur articulates with the proximal tibia while the patella sits anterior to the femoral condyle within the extensor mechanism. Slender fibers of the lateral patellotibial ligament extend from the inferolateral border of the patella toward the anterolateral proximal tibia, blending near the lateral retinaculum and patellar tendon as they approach the tibial tuberosity. Posterior to this anterior soft-tissue plane, the fibular collateral ligament runs from the lateral femoral epicondyle to the head of the fibula, and the lateral meniscus occupies the tibiofemoral joint line deep to the capsule. Intra-articular stabilizers (ACL and PCL) sit central and posterior to the patellar tendon, with articular cartilage capping the femoral condyle and tibial plateau. This angle matters when you are teaching or planning around lateral patellar stability because the lateral patellotibial ligament is a discrete component of the lateral patellar restraints, working with the lateral patellofemoral ligament and retinaculum to limit excessive medial translation in extension and guide patellar tracking. It also clarifies what is not the same structure: the fibular collateral ligament lies more posterior and lateral, and the iliotibial tract is more superficial and proximal, distinctions that reduce confusion during exam, ultrasound correlation, or surgical exposure.
