Description
Seen in lateral profile on a male skeleton, the cervical vertebrae stack inferior to the occiput while the scapula lies posterolateral to the rib cage, articulating with the clavicle and proximal humerus. A longitudinal muscle band is isolated along the posterolateral neck, running from the cervical transverse processes toward the superior angle and medial border of the scapula, consistent with levator scapulae rather than longissimus cervicis. Deep to that superficial strap, the longissimus cervicis would be expected to course more medially within the erector spinae column, spanning upper thoracic transverse processes to cervical transverse processes. Clinically, separating levator scapulae from the deeper longissimus cervicis matters when teaching posterior triangle anatomy and when correlating neck pain patterns to muscular sources. Levator scapulae commonly refers pain to the posterolateral neck and superomedial scapular region and can contribute to elevated scapula and restricted cervical rotation, while longissimus cervicis acts as a segmental extensor and ipsilateral rotator of the cervical spine and becomes relevant in whiplash-associated disorders and posterior cervical muscle strain.
