Description
Originating from the lateral third of the clavicle, the acromion, and the spine of the scapula, the male deltoid forms a thick, triangular cap over the glenohumeral joint in an anterior shoulder view. Its anterior fibers sweep inferolaterally and posteriorly across the proximal humerus to converge on the deltoid tuberosity, lying superficial to the rotator cuff tendons and the subacromial space. Distal to the shoulder, the anterior compartment of the arm continues into view with biceps brachii and the forearm flexor mass leading toward the wrist and hand tendons. Spatially, the deltoid sits lateral to the pectoralis major and superior to the biceps brachii tendon as it approaches the intertubercular (bicipital) groove. Anterior deltoid anatomy matters because it defines the functional and surgical topography of the shoulder, from palpating the acromion to estimating the safe window for intramuscular injections. Misplaced injections too inferiorly or posteriorly risk the radial nerve, while injections too superiorly can irritate the subacromial bursa or rotator cuff. Deltoid contour also changes after axillary nerve injury, classically following anterior shoulder dislocation or proximal humeral fracture. A visible landmark.
