Description

Medial tibial condyle and its adjacent tibial plateau dominate this anterior view of the proximal tibia on the inner (medial) side of the knee. The medial articular surface sits superior to the metadiaphysis, with the intercondylar eminence rising centrally toward the tibial spine where the medial and lateral plateaus meet. Just inferior to the condylar region, the anterior tibial tuberosity projects forward on the proximal shaft, establishing the anterior landmark line toward the shin. Bony contours are crisp. Clinically, the medial tibial plateau is a frequent site of degenerative change in varus alignment and medial compartment osteoarthritis, where subchondral sclerosis and marginal osteophytes alter the normally gently concave articular contour. Fracture patterns of the medial plateau (Schatzker type IV) and split depression variants are taught best when the viewer can relate the condylar margin to the anterior cortex and the central intercondylar region in one fixed frame. The medial condyle also frames the proximal attachment area for the medial collateral ligament (via the medial tibial metaphysis) and the deep relationship of the medial meniscus to the tibial plateau, a useful reminder when discussing meniscal root tears and extrusion. Use this illustration in musculoskeletal anatomy courses when introducing surface landmarks of the proximal tibia and in orthopaedic teaching files alongside knee radiographs and CT reconstructions of tibial plateau fractures. It also fits surgical education materials for total knee arthroplasty planning and tibial tunnel orientation in cruciate ligament reconstruction, where the intercondylar region and anterior tibial cortex serve as reference points.
