Description
Arising from the medial cord of the brachial plexus (roots typically C8 to T1), the medial pectoral nerve courses anteroinferiorly from the axillary region toward the deep surface of pectoralis minor, then continues to pectoralis major on the anterior thoracic wall. A lateral torso perspective places the rib cage and thoracic vertebral column posteriorly as firm landmarks, with the nerve trajectory running superficial to the ribs but anterior to the costovertebral joints and paravertebral region. Portions of the scapula sit posterolaterally, framing the axillary inlet where the cords form around the second part of the axillary artery. Orientation is clear. Clinically, this nerve matters because it is routinely encountered during axillary dissection, mastectomy, and pectoralis minor division or release, where inadvertent injury can weaken adduction and internal rotation by denervating segments of pectoralis major (often via a communicating loop with the lateral pectoral nerve). Its relationship to pectoralis minor also makes it a practical teaching example of how named cords do not map cleanly to named terminal branches, and why motor supply to the pectoral muscles is shared and variable. The lateral view supports that lesson better than an anterior chest wall schematic.
