Description
Middle frontal gyrus occupies the lateral convexity of the frontal lobe between the superior frontal sulcus superiorly and the inferior frontal sulcus inferiorly, presented from an anterior (frontal) viewpoint. From this fixed perspective, its anterior extent approaches the frontal pole, while its posterior portion lies anterior to the precentral gyrus and motor strip, separated by the precentral sulcus. Medially, the middle frontal gyrus borders the superior frontal gyrus near the interhemispheric fissure, and laterally it transitions toward the inferior frontal gyrus and the anterior opercular region. Sulcal depth and gyral curvature define the convolutional boundaries. Clinically, the middle frontal gyrus overlaps core dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (classically Brodmann areas 9 and 46), a region queried in discussions of working memory, planning, and cognitive control, and often referenced when localizing lesions that present with dysexecutive symptoms. Its relationship to the inferior frontal sulcus and precentral sulcus also matters during planning of frontal craniotomies and cortical mapping, where the anterior border of primary motor cortex must be distinguished from prefrontal gyri using sulcal landmarks rather than functional assumptions.
