Description
Arising from the internal carotid artery, the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) is traced through its proximal A1 segment as it courses anteromedially toward the midline to meet the anterior communicating artery. From that junction, the paired A2 segments continue superiorly within the interhemispheric fissure, running along the superior surface of the corpus callosum as they give off cortical branches to the medial frontal and parietal lobes. Surrounding neuroanatomy is rendered with sulci and gyri of the cerebral hemispheres, while adjacent Circle of Willis components, including the middle cerebral artery laterally and proximal perforators at the anterior perforated substance, sit in expected anatomical proximity. Bright color coding separates arteries from veins and nervous tissue. Orientation is clear. That proximal ACA course is a standard landmark in stroke neurology and aneurysm care. Saccular aneurysms at the anterior communicating artery complex often project between the A1 and A2 segments and can compress the optic chiasm or optic nerves, producing visual field deficits before rupture. For endovascular planning and microsurgical clipping, asymmetry or hypoplasia of an A1 segment matters because it shifts cross flow patterns and changes which perforators are at risk when temporary clips or coils are placed. Small perforating branches to the basal forebrain are unforgiving. Infarcts here can present with abulia and memory disturbance. Neuroanatomy instructors can place this plate in lectures on the Circle of Willis, hemispheric vascular territories, and the medial frontal cortex blood supply, pairing it with axial CTA or MRA teaching files.
