Description
Posterior torso anatomy is rendered with a translucent integument window to localize the large intestine within the abdominal and pelvic cavities of an elderly Black male. The cecum sits in the right iliac fossa, continuous superiorly with the ascending colon, which turns at the right colic (hepatic) flexure into the transverse colon spanning the upper abdomen. From the left colic (splenic) flexure, the descending colon tracks inferiorly along the left flank to the sigmoid colon in the left lower quadrant, then continues midline as the rectum within the posterior pelvis. Caliber contrast with adjacent small-bowel loops is emphasized, reinforcing the broader lumen and haustrated contour expected of the colon. Age-related morphology matters when you are teaching or planning around the colon’s variable position and redundancy. An elongated or more tortuous sigmoid colon is common in older adults and can predispose to sigmoid volvulus, a diagnosis often suggested clinically by progressive abdominal distension and confirmed on abdominal radiography or CT. Posterior localization also helps orient learners to retroperitoneal fixation, the ascending and descending segments are relatively immobile compared with the transverse and sigmoid colon, which can influence endoscopic loop formation and surgical mobilization during colectomy.
