Seen from the lateral aspect of an adult male lower limb, the lateral head of the gastrocnemius forms the dominant posterior contour of the proximal calf, arising superiorly from the lateral femoral condyle and sweeping inferiorly toward the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. Anterior to it, the tibialis anterior and the lateral compartment line, including fibularis (peroneus) longus and brevis, define the anterolateral and lateral profiles of the leg, while the soleus sits deep and more inferior, contributing to the lower calf bulk. The popliteal fossa lies just proximal and posterior to the knee joint line, with the gastrocnemius crossing the knee and ankle in series with the triceps surae. Clear surface anatomy.
