Centered in the thorax, the heart sits in the middle mediastinum between the right and left lungs, with its apex pointing inferolaterally to the left and the base directed posterosuperiorly toward the great vessels. Superior to the cardiac silhouette, the trachea bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, which branch into lobar bronchi supplying the three lobes of the right lung and two lobes of the left lung, the latter molded around the cardiac notch.
