Description
Framed around the lateral aspect of the knee, the inferior lateral genicular vein is shown as a deep venous channel coursing along the inferolateral margin of the femorotibial and proximal tibiofibular region. It tracks in close company with the inferior lateral genicular artery and sits deep to the iliotibial tract and lateral retinacular fibers, adjacent to the lateral tibial condyle and fibular head. Proximally, its tributaries communicate with the venous plexus around the knee, while distally it blends into the deep venous drainage of the anterior and lateral compartments. Understanding this vessel matters when you are teaching the periarticular venous network that accompanies the genicular arteries and forms a dense anastomotic ring around the knee. Lateral approaches for total knee arthroplasty, fixation of lateral tibial plateau fractures, or procedures near the fibular head and proximal tibiofibular joint can encounter these veins and their small venules, a common source of persistent oozing when not anticipated. Varicosities and postoperative hematoma around the lateral joint line are often discussed without clearly separating superficial tributaries from deep genicular veins, and this view helps make that distinction.
