Description
Seen from the medial aspect of the proximal upper limb, the medial brachial cutaneous nerve (medial cutaneous nerve of arm) courses along the medial arm in close association with the brachial fascia and the neurovascular plane that also contains the basilic vein and the brachial artery with its venae comitantes. Proximally it lies near the axilla and medial border of the arm, then runs distal toward the medial epicondyle, where it begins to fan into superficial cutaneous branches over the medial brachium. Communicating twigs toward the intercostobrachial nerve (T2) are suggested by the superficial, sheet-like spread in the upper medial arm. Fine branches cross anterior to the medial head of triceps and the biceps brachii on their way to the skin. Medial exposure matters because this nerve is a common source of sensory symptoms after axillary surgery, venous cannulation, or trauma to the medial arm, and its overlap with the intercostobrachial territory can confuse localization of numbness after breast or lymph node procedures. It is also a frequent bystander during basilic vein access and brachiobasilic arteriovenous fistula creation, where traction or transection can produce persistent dysesthesia along the medial arm.
