Centered on the middle cranial fossa, the middle meningeal artery enters the cranial cavity through the foramen spinosum and then runs anterolaterally between the dura mater and the inner table of the temporal and parietal bones. Its frontal (anterior) and parietal (posterior) branches arc superiorly and posteriorly across the squamous temporal region, tracking the calvarial grooves lateral to the sella turcica and the margins of the sphenoid. Nearby skull base landmarks logically visible in this superior internal view include the foramen ovale, the petrous ridge, and the outlines of the anterior, middle, and posterior cranial fossae. Vessels of the cerebral arterial circle (circle of Willis) sit more medially and deeper, while venous channels occupy adjacent corridors along the inner cranial surface. Rupture of the middle meningeal artery remains the classic mechanism for epidural hematoma after lateral skull trauma, often at the pterion where the frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid bones meet and the artery lies close to bone. Location matters. The artery’s course also anchors teaching on meningeal grooves and dural relationships, and it provides practical orientation when correlating skull base foramina with traversing neurovascular structures during lateral approaches to the middle cranial fossa.
