Description
Arising from the olfactory epithelium in the superior nasal cavity, multiple olfactory fila pass superiorly through the foramina of the cribriform plate to reach the olfactory bulb, which rests on the orbital plate of the frontal bone along the anterior cranial fossa. From the bulb, the olfactory tract courses posteriorly and slightly laterally on the inferior surface of the frontal lobe toward the olfactory trigone and anterior perforated substance. Because the broader plate illustrates cranial nerves emerging from the brainstem in yellow against the red midbrain, pons, and medulla, the proximal attachments of CN II through CN XII are also implied in their expected rostrocaudal sequence along the ventral and lateral brainstem. Spatially, CN I sits most anterior and superior relative to the brainstem nerves, separated by the frontal lobes and anterior cranial fossa. Smell is the outlier among cranial nerves, bypassing the brainstem and synapsing in the olfactory bulb before projecting centrally, so placing CN I against the anterior cranial base helps learners avoid the common mistake of searching for an olfactory “root” on the medulla or pons. This relationship is clinically concrete: shearing of the olfactory fila at the cribriform plate after frontal head trauma can produce anosmia and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, and the close apposition of bulb and tract to the frontal lobe underlies olfactory deficits in anterior cranial fossa and olfactory groove meningiomas. Small nerve, big consequences. Use this plate in neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses when teaching the cranial nerve map, or in neurosurgical and ENT education to orient discussions of anterior skull base fractures and endoscopic approaches near the cribriform plate.
