Arising from the anterior aspect of the zygomatic bone, the zygomaticus minor courses inferomedially across the malar (cheek) region toward the upper lip, blending with the orbicularis oris and the musculature of the nasolabial fold. Superficial to the maxilla and lateral to the levator labii superioris, its fibers typically lie medial to the zygomaticus major, which runs more laterally toward the modiolus. Near its insertion, the muscle interdigitates with adjacent elevators of the upper lip at the level of the philtrum and lateral upper lip. Small muscle, clear purpose.
