Description
Anterior cervical anatomy is centered in the highlighted neck region of a Black adult female figure, with surface contours corresponding to the hyoid level superiorly, the thyroid cartilage and cricoid cartilage in the midline, and the trachea continuing inferiorly toward the suprasternal (jugular) notch. Deep to the anterior neck skin, the infrahyoid strap muscles (sternohyoid and sternothyroid) would lie superficial to the larynx and proximal trachea, while the sternocleidomastoid muscles frame the neck laterally as they course from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle. The thyroid gland occupies the anterolateral trachea, its isthmus typically crossing the 2nd to 4th tracheal rings. Midline landmarks read cleanly. For airway access, the anterior view matters because you can teach the palpable sequence from thyroid notch to cricothyroid membrane to cricoid ring, the exact corridor used for emergency cricothyrotomy when endotracheal intubation fails. Thyroid relationships also become immediately practical: an enlarged thyroid (goiter) can displace the trachea, complicate intubation, and alter the surgical field during thyroidectomy, where protecting the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands depends on understanding how the lobes wrap the trachea. This perspective supports patient-facing communication as well, since the visible neck contour often drives complaints of anterior neck fullness, dysphagia, or voice change.
