Description
Running in the posterior pharyngeal wall, the palatopharyngeus is seen in sagittal section as a longitudinal muscular sheet descending from the palatine aponeurosis and soft palate toward the lateral pharyngeal wall and posterior border of the thyroid cartilage. Superiorly it relates to the levator veli palatini and the palatine tonsillar region, while its mucosal folds outline the palatopharyngeal arch posterior to the palatoglossal arch. Anteriorly, the oral cavity with tongue musculature and the mandibular dentition are sectioned, and posteriorly the cervical vertebrae define the prevertebral boundary; the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx stack inferiorly in clear continuity. Adjacent facial and masticatory muscles, including temporalis and masseter, provide orientation. A clean midline reference. Functionally, palatopharyngeus couples soft palate depression with pharyngeal shortening and laryngeal elevation during swallowing, so a sagittal cut clarifies its role in velopharyngeal closure and bolus propulsion more directly than most surface views.
