Description
Paraolfactory sulci bracket the subcallosal area on the inferior surface of the frontal lobe, forming paired, short grooves near the midline just anterior to the rostrum of the corpus callosum. In this inferior view, each sulcus lies on the medial orbital region of the cerebrum, defining the lateral edges of the subcallosal region and outlining the transition toward the paraterminal gyrus and septal area. Their shallow course is appreciated against the surrounding basal frontal cortex, where medial and lateral relationships are easier to judge than in a dorsal perspective. Small landmarks, big consequences. These grooves matter because the subcallosal region they outline is a key limbic and basal forebrain neighborhood, frequently referenced when localizing the subcallosal cingulate region (Brodmann area 25) for functional neurosurgery and research in affective disorders.
