Description
Seen in lateral profile of the male thorax, the pectoralis minor occupies the anterior axillary region, arising as distinct muscular slips from the superior margins of ribs 3 through 5 near their costal cartilages. Its fibers converge superolaterally to the coracoid process of the scapula, lying deep to pectoralis major and anterior to the serratus anterior along the lateral rib cage. Posteriorly, the scapular body overlies the ribs, while the clavicle and proximal humerus frame the shoulder girdle superiorly and laterally. Bone landmarks remain legible through semi-transparent soft tissues. Clinically, pectoralis minor is a frequent driver of scapular anterior tilt and protraction when tight, a pattern that can narrow the retropectoralis minor space and contribute to neurovascular symptoms consistent with pectoralis minor syndrome (often grouped under thoracic outlet presentations). The lateral viewpoint clarifies why the muscle can tether the coracoid inferiorly and anteriorly, altering scapulothoracic mechanics and predisposing to subacromial impingement during overhead elevation. It also supports surgical and procedural orientation around the coracoid, where the brachial plexus cords and axillary vessels course deep to the pectoralis minor.
