Description
Petrous ridge (superior border of the pars petrosa ossis temporalis) defines the sharp upper edge of the petrous temporal bone as it projects anteromedially within the posterior cranial fossa. Along its crest, a linear sulcus for the superior petrosal sinus tracks from the petrous apex toward the mastoid region, sitting superior to the rougher posterior surface of the petrous bone. From this posterior perspective, the ridge forms a distinct boundary between the middle cranial fossa (superior to the ridge) and the posterior cranial fossa (inferior to it), where the dura of the tentorium cerebelli attaches. A hard landmark. Clinically, the superior petrosal sinus and its bony groove matter in petroclival and cerebellopontine angle work because the sinus runs at the tentorial attachment, adjacent to the trigeminal impression and near the porus trigeminus at the petrous apex. Surgeons planning a subtemporal transtentorial or posterior petrosal route need a precise sense of where the ridge lies relative to tentorial incision lines and venous drainage pathways, since injury or thrombosis of the superior petrosal sinus can complicate exposure and raise the risk of venous infarction. The posterior viewpoint in this illustration favors orientation for posterior fossa anatomy, where the petrous ridge is often discussed alongside CPA tumors (for example vestibular schwannoma extension toward the tentorium) and dural-based lesions such as petroclival meningioma.
