Pituitary infundibulum (pituitary stalk) extends inferiorly from the hypothalamus in a lateral view, bridging the floor of the third ventricle to the superior surface of the hypophysis within the sella turcica. Superiorly, the stalk blends with the tuber cinereum and median eminence, while the pituitary gland sits inferior and slightly anterior in relation to the dorsum sellae. Anterior to the infundibulum, the optic chiasm and optic recess are typically positioned as key midline landmarks; posteriorly, the mammillary region lies closer to the hypothalamic posterior area. The proximal to distal taper of the stalk is easy to appreciate. Small structure, big consequences.
