Seen in lateral profile on an adult male trunk, the rectus abdominis forms a vertical muscular column on the anterior abdominal wall, extending from the pubic crest and pubic symphysis inferiorly toward the costal cartilages of ribs 5 to 7 and the xiphoid process superiorly. The muscle belly is enclosed by the aponeurotic rectus sheath, with its anterior lamina lying superficial and the posterior lamina deep to the rectus above the arcuate line; the linea alba sits medially as the interlacing midline raphe where the left and right sheaths meet. Along the superior and lateral margins, the rectus abdominis relates to the costal margin and the ribs, while posteriorly it is separated from the thoracolumbar spine by the abdominal viscera and their fascial layers.
