Description
Posterior to the femoral shaft, the short head of the biceps femoris runs along the lateral aspect of the distal thigh, arising from the lateral lip of the linea aspera and the lateral supracondylar line before tapering into the common biceps femoris tendon. Laterally, that tendon tracks toward the fibular head, while the long head lies more superficial and slightly medial as it descends from the ischial tuberosity. Superiorly, the pelvis and proximal femora establish the hamstring compartment in relation to the ischium, sacrum, and posterior acetabular region; inferiorly, the muscle belly approaches the popliteal fossa and the lateral knee. Clear lateral landmark. A posterior view focused on the biceps femoris insertion matters because the fibular head is a crowded surgical neighborhood, shared with the fibular collateral ligament and the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it courses around the fibular neck. Strain patterns also differ: the short head, as the only hamstring component innervated by the common fibular division of the sciatic nerve and originating on the femur rather than the ischium, is implicated in distal lateral hamstring pain and lateral knee symptoms that can mimic iliotibial band syndrome or lateral meniscal pathology. Use this plate in gross anatomy and kinesiology teaching to differentiate the biceps femoris heads by origin, innervation, and their convergence on the fibular head, and in orthopedics or sports medicine materials describing posterolateral knee injuries, biceps femoris tendinopathy, or surgical approaches around the fibular head with nerve-at-risk cautions.
