Description
Posterior anatomy is presented from the occipital region to the plantar aspect of the foot, centered on the vertebral column and the shoulder and pelvic girdles. Superficial back musculature includes the trapezius spanning from the external occipital protuberance and nuchal ligament inferiorly toward the acromion and scapular spine, with the latissimus dorsi sweeping inferolaterally from the thoracolumbar fascia toward the proximal humerus. Along the midline, the erector spinae muscle mass parallels the spinous processes, while the scapulae lie posterolateral to the rib cage and the gluteus maximus forms the bulk of the posterior hip, continuous distally with the posterior thigh compartments and the gastrocnemius-Achilles tendon complex. This posterior perspective matters when you need clean surface-to-deep orientation for the back, hip, and posterior thigh, because many clinical problems track predictable paths along fascia and neurovascular corridors. Sciatic nerve territory is taught best from behind, where its course deep to gluteus maximus and into the posterior thigh explains the pattern of sciatica, hamstring weakness, and the safe zone for intramuscular injections in the superolateral gluteal quadrant.
