Description
Running from the mastoid region toward the root of the neck, a superficial cervical lymphatic network is traced in green along the lateral aspect of a male neck. Lymphatic vessels and nodes align closely with the superficial fascia overlying the sternocleidomastoid, then descend toward the posterior triangle, bordered anteriorly by sternocleidomastoid and posteriorly by trapezius. Superiorly, the chain relates to the auricle and lateral skull base, while inferiorly it approaches the clavicular region where superficial collectors converge toward the deep cervical nodes and the venous angle. Lateral mapping of the superficial cervical lymphatics matters when you need to distinguish cutaneous drainage pathways from the deeper jugular chain that follows the internal jugular vein. Metastatic spread from scalp, auricular, and posterior neck skin commonly reaches superficial nodes first, and this view helps explain why an upper posterior triangle mass can represent either reactive lymphadenopathy or early nodal disease before deeper nodal stations enlarge. It also supports operative planning: during posterior triangle lymph node biopsy or selective neck dissection, superficial lymphatics cross the course of the spinal accessory nerve (CN XI), a known risk point for postoperative shoulder dysfunction.
