Description
Superior articular process of a lumbar vertebra occupies the posterolateral margin of the vertebral arch, rising from the junction of the pedicle and lamina and terminating in the superior articular facet (zygapophyseal facet). From a superior perspective, the facet surface appears gently concave to slightly curved and faces predominantly posteromedially, positioned lateral to the vertebral canal and medial to the transverse process region. The articular cartilage bearing surface sits just posterior to the pedicle, where it will meet the inferior articular process of the vertebra immediately superior to form the paired lumbar zygapophyseal (facet) joints. Bony margins, including the base of the spinous process and the laminar roof, frame the facet complex. Facet orientation in the lumbar spine governs coupled motion and helps resist anterior translation, so subtle changes in the contour of the superior articular facet matter in both biomechanics teaching and clinical explanation of low back pain.
