Seen from a lateral aspect, the supraclavicular nerves (C3 to C4) emerge at the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid in the posterior triangle of the neck and descend inferiorly toward the clavicle. Their medial, intermediate, and lateral branches fan anteriorly and inferiorly across the clavicle to supply cutaneous innervation over the anteromedial shoulder, the superior pectoral region, and the upper scapular area. Bony landmarks visible in this field typically include the skull with mandible and maxilla, the cervical vertebrae, the clavicle, and upper ribs, providing orientation for the nerve’s superficial course. Cranial nerve pathways in the face and neck may be included for regional context, but the supraclavicular distribution remains the focal peripheral pattern. Clinically, this lateral presentation maps directly onto the sensory territory encountered during clavicle fractures, plate fixation, and supraclavicular incisions, where traction or transection can produce postoperative numbness or painful neuroma over the anterior shoulder and upper chest. It also supports accurate placement of a superficial cervical plexus block, performed at the midpoint of the posterior sternocleidomastoid border, while clarifying why the supraclavicular nerves can be confused with the adjacent great auricular and transverse cervical nerves in limited exposures.
