Description
Running superficially along the anterolateral trunk, the thoracoepigastric vein is shown coursing between the thoracic wall and anterior abdominal wall, bridging the lateral thoracic vein superiorly with the superficial epigastric vein inferiorly. Pectoralis major dominates the anterior chest, with the deltoid capping the shoulder and the proximal biceps brachii and forearm flexor mass entering the frame laterally. Over the clavicular region, superficial tributaries converge toward the axillary vein and cephalic vein, while the thoracoepigastric channel tracks inferiorly toward the inguinal region, lying superficial to the external oblique aponeurosis. A long, continuous collateral pathway. Clinically, this vessel matters because it provides a visible, low resistance conduit between the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava territories when deeper channels are obstructed. In superior vena cava syndrome, engorgement of the lateral thoracic and thoracoepigastric veins can produce prominent superficial venous distension over the chest and upper abdomen, with flow often directed caudally. In portal hypertension, the same superficial epigastric network can participate in abdominal wall collaterals, so tracing this anastomosis helps differentiate patterns of venous dilation at the bedside and in teaching rounds.
