Description
Navicular bone anatomy is centered on its prominent tuberositas ossis navicularis, which projects from the medial and plantar aspect and dominates the inferior (plantar) view. From this fixed perspective, the tuberosity lies medial to the concave plantar surface and sits just anterior to the posterior talar articular region (for the head of the talus), with the distal body of the navicular extending toward the cuneiform facets. Lateral to the tuberosity, the plantar contour flattens as it approaches the lateral margin, where an accessory facet for the cuboid may be present in some specimens. Medial is unmistakable. Clinical relevance concentrates at this bony prominence because it anchors the tibialis posterior tendon insertion and provides attachment area for the plantar calcaneonavicular (spring) ligament complex that supports the medial longitudinal arch. Pain over the navicular tuberosity often raises the differential of accessory navicular syndrome (os naviculare accessorium) or tibialis posterior tendinopathy, and the plantar, inferior viewpoint helps you explain why a traction-related enthesopathy or bursal irritation localizes to the medial midfoot rather than the dorsum. The isolated bony surface detail also supports teaching the relationship between the tuberosity and the talonavicular joint, a frequent site of degeneration in adult acquired flatfoot deformity.
