Description

Concentric layers of the colonic wall are rendered in section from the luminal mucosa outward through submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa, with the transverse colon emphasized and its haustra producing a scalloped contour along the external surface. The mucosa lines the lumen and forms gentle folds, while the submucosal layer sits immediately deep to it as a distinct band of connective tissue separating epithelium from the smooth muscle coat. Surrounding this, the inner circular and outer longitudinal smooth muscle layers define the muscularis externa, then taper into the outer serosa at the peritoneal surface, where pale fatty tissue suggests mesenteric or pericolic adipose associated with the bowel. Orientation is sectional rather than planar.
