Description
Zygomaticofacial foramen sits on the lateral (malar) surface of the zygomatic bone, just inferior to the lateral orbital rim and anterior to the zygomaticotemporal region where the temporal fossa begins. From this fixed lateral perspective, the foramen appears as a small, round cortical interruption on the cheekbone’s convexity, positioned superficial to the zygomatic airless cancellous bone and oriented toward the overlying facial soft tissues. The nearby bony contours that help you triangulate it include the frontozygomatic region superiorly, the zygomaticomaxillary margin anteroinferiorly, and the thickened body of the zygoma that forms the prominence of the cheek. Tiny, but consistent. Clinically, the zygomaticofacial foramen is the exit for the zygomaticofacial nerve (branch of the zygomatic nerve from V2) and accompanying vessels, supplying sensation to skin over the malar eminence and contributing to lateral eyelid and upper cheek innervation. That makes it a practical landmark during midface approaches, reduction and fixation of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, and placement of malar implants, where dissection or hardware near the foramen can produce postoperative hypoesthesia or dysesthesia over the cheek. The isolated bony emphasis and crisp cortical edge definition in this view support teaching the distinction between the zygomaticofacial foramen and adjacent foramina that can be confused on palpation or in operative fields, such as the zygomaticotemporal foramen and the infraorbital foramen on the maxilla. Facial anatomy courses, dental education (regional anesthesia and maxillofacial landmarks), and operative atlases for plastic surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery can use this illustration to label foramina and map cutaneous sensory territories to their bony exit points.
