Description
Oriented in an anterior view of the male head and neck, the temporoparietal fascia is rendered as a thin, continuous sheet over the temporal region, sweeping superior to the auricle and blending with the galea aponeurotica across the scalp. Laterally, it lies superficial to the temporalis fascia and temporalis muscle, and it continues inferiorly toward the parotidomasseteric fascia at the level of the zygomatic arch. Superficial facial and cervical muscles frame the field, including frontalis on the forehead, orbicularis oculi around the orbit, masseter over the mandibular ramus, and sternocleidomastoid descending obliquely toward the manubrium and clavicle. Fine connective tissue planes are emphasized. For temporal and periauricular surgery, this layer is a surgical map, because the temporoparietal fascia forms the safe, vascularized plane used for a temporoparietal fascia flap and also marks where the superficial temporal artery and vein course toward the scalp. Dissection too deep risks entering the temporalis fascia or injuring the temporal branch of the facial nerve as it traverses the zygomatic arch within the superficial fascial layers, a classic hazard in brow lift, facelift (rhytidectomy), and parotid approaches. Teaching the distinction between temporoparietal fascia and deep temporal fascia is easier in this perspective.
