Description
Anteriorly oriented cardiac lymphatic vessels course over the epicardial surface of a male heart, tracking the grooves and fat pads that also carry the coronary circulation. Superficial lymphatics accompany the right and left coronary arteries along the atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus and run inferiorly in the anterior interventricular sulcus beside the left anterior descending artery, with tributaries spreading laterally across the right and left ventricles. Small lymph nodes are positioned along the proximal collecting channels, while deeper collecting trunks converge toward the base of the heart near the roots of the great vessels. Color coding separates lymphatic channels and nodes from the coronary arteries and cardiac veins for rapid orientation. For teaching and clinical correlation, this view clarifies why pericardial and epicardial inflammation can produce prominent lymphatic recruitment and nodal enlargement at the cardiac base. Lymphatic drainage from the myocardium and pericardium ultimately reaches tracheobronchial (bronchomediastinal) nodes, a pathway that helps explain mediastinal nodal involvement in inflammatory heart disease and the dissemination patterns seen with primary cardiac tumors or metastatic pericardial disease.
