Description

Arising from the base of the heart, the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk sit superior to the ventricles, with the pulmonary trunk emerging anteriorly from the right ventricle and passing slightly leftward before it would bifurcate into the right and left pulmonary arteries. The right atrium forms the right cardiac border and receives the superior vena cava superiorly, while the left ventricle dominates the left and inferior margins and tapers to the apex in the left fifth intercostal region in situ. Across the anterior surface, the anterior interventricular sulcus runs toward the apex and typically carries the left anterior descending artery (anterior interventricular branch of the left coronary artery) with the great cardiac vein. Coronary vessels lace the epicardium. An anterior cardiac view matters because it aligns with what you encounter in median sternotomy and what you interpret on frontal chest imaging, where the right atrium and left ventricle contribute most to the silhouette. The relationship of the pulmonary trunk to the aortic root and right ventricular outflow tract anchors discussions of congenital outflow abnormalities (for example, transposition of the great arteries) and guides operative orientation during pulmonary artery catheter placement or repair of right ventricular outflow obstruction.
