Description
Running in anterior projection from the head to the feet, the arterial tree is laid over a standing male skeleton, with the aorta descending from the thorax into the abdomen before bifurcating into the common iliac arteries anterior to the sacrum. Superiorly, the common carotid arteries ascend in the neck beside the cervical vertebrae, while the subclavian arteries pass laterally toward the upper limbs, continuing as axillary and brachial arteries along the medial aspect of the arm. Distally, radial and ulnar arteries course into the hands, and in the lower limb the femoral artery runs anteromedially through the thigh, becomes the popliteal artery posterior to the knee, and continues as anterior tibial, posterior tibial, and fibular (peroneal) arteries toward the ankle and foot. Bony landmarks remain prominent. This whole-body layout makes the segmental logic of arterial supply easy to teach and to reference, from elastic arteries in the central circulation to progressively smaller muscular arteries and arterioles in the extremities. Pattern recognition matters clinically: atherosclerotic disease concentrates at bifurcations and along the carotid and iliofemoral pathways, while peripheral arterial disease classically presents with femoropopliteal and tibial involvement that maps cleanly onto these named segments. The skeletal overlay also supports procedural planning, since palpation points and access sites are taught relative to bone, for example femoral access at the femoral head and radial access at the distal radius. Use this figure in gross anatomy and cardiovascular teaching blocks to anchor nomenclature from the aortic arch through the distal limb vessels, and in clinical skills materials that pair arterial palpation with surface anatomy.
