Description
Oriented in lateral profile, the male foot and distal leg are presented with the fibular (lateral) column in the foreground, including the distal fibula and lateral malleolus articulating with the talus, then continuing distally through the calcaneus, cuboid, and the fourth and fifth metatarsals to the phalanges. Along the posterolateral ankle, the peroneal (fibularis) tendons course behind the lateral malleolus toward the lateral midfoot, while the extensor tendons and retinacular bands span the dorsum more anteriorly. Red arterial channels and blue venous companions track longitudinally around the lateral malleolar region and onto the dorsolateral foot, where perforating branches communicate between dorsal and plantar networks. Lateral vascular anatomy matters when you are mapping the arterial inflow that reaches the dorsum via the anterior tibial artery and dorsalis pedis, and the posterolateral contributions that can arise through perforators from the fibular artery, a common site of anatomic variation. A clear depiction of the superficial and deep venous pathways also supports planning for venous access, flap design, and avoidance of iatrogenic injury during lateral ankle arthroscopy or open reduction and internal fixation of distal fibular fractures.
